Robert Benjamin "Ben" Sage, 86, of Machesney Park died peacefully on October 18, 2021, surrounded by his family. He was born on September 11, 1935, in Freeport to Robert and Mary (Hedrick) Sage. He was a graduate of Dixon High School and the University of Illinois. Following college, Ben served in the Army National Guard. He was employed as a restaurant manager at Prince Castle, then as a computer operator for Woodward Governor where he spent most of his career. He later worked as a machine operator for UDL Laboratories and, upon retirement, was a customer service associate and greeter at Walmart where he thoroughly enjoyed helping customers.
Ben was a loving father and an engaged grandfather and great-grandfather, always supportive and involved. His greatest joy was to be with family and friends. He was an avid tennis player, a huge car and train enthusiast and a lifelong, devoted Cubs fan. He was also a talented photographer, leaving thousands of pictures for family and friends.
Survived by his sons, Jeff (Cindy) Sage of Roscoe, Tim (Laura) Sage of Caledonia, Rick (Peg) Sage of Haslet, TX; grandchildren, Danielle (Adam) Peterson, Jason (Natalie) Sage, Allison (Ken) Braswell, Michael Sage, Maddie (Kyle) Nieman, Nick Sage; great-grandchildren, Ryker, Kyrie, Lottie, Nora, Emersyn, Walter, Silas, Everett (and one on the way in November!); sister, Penny (Gary) McGinty of Madison, WI; former spouse and special friend, Mary Jo Mitchell of McCormick, SC.
Ben's family is grateful to the staff of UW Health, Rockford Nephrology Associates and Heartland Hospice for their loving care. A memorial service celebrating Ben's life will be held on October 27, 2021, at 11 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, 343 Grand Ave., Loves Park, IL 61111. Private interment in Malta Cemetery.
