Mary Golamis Moss, 68, passed peacefully on July 25, 2015 at home surrounded by her family while in hospice care from cancer. Mary was born in Williamsport, PA, on June 27, 1947 the daughter of Peter and Artemis Golamis. She graduated from Loyalsock High School in Williamsport, and she obtained her BS in Health and Physical Education at Lockhaven State College. Mary volunteered for VISTA (Volunteer In Service to America – the domestic equivalent to the Peace Corps) in St. Louis. Upon completion of training, she was assigned to North Iowa Community Action Organization in Mason City to work with low income teens. There, she met her husband Jerry Moss at the community action organization. She was employed by the YWCA in Mason City as the youth program director and taught swimming to babies. She was a very strong swimmer and taught the lifesaving classes. She became a homemaker to raise a family. Mary and Jerry had two children, Jen and Tim. As the children grew older she helped them achieve academic excellence and worked as a substitute teacher in various schools. Mary had a special bond with her granddaughter, Arianna, and enjoyed living with her. Mary was an accomplished equestrian, lover of animals, an avid reader of sci-fi/fantasy, enjoyed flower gardening, and classical music. She and her children were very involved in 4-H and horse projects, and she led an equestrian drill team and started and led the local Pony Club. In addition to her husband, children and granddaughter, Mary is survived by her sisters, Joann Sneeder and Pauline Thomas, and her brother Anthony Golamis. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Louis Golamis. The family wishes to thank Hospice Care of America, Cleveland Clinic and the University of Wisconsin for their care and assistance. An informal gathering in honor of Mary will be on Sunday, August 9, 2015 from 5-8 p.m., with a Life Celebration Service at 5:30 p.m. at Anderson Japanese Gardens, 318 Spring Creek Road, Rockford.
