James Conrad Backstrom, 68, of Poplar Grove died on January 4, 2019 in his home, surrounded by his loving family. Born on April 28, 1950 in Wilmette, son of William and Bertha (Heinz) Backstrom. Graduate of St. George High School in Evanston. Jim obtained his Bachelor of Accounting from University of Illinois at Chicago, and his Master's Degree in Information Systems from DePaul University. United in Marriage to Mary Beth Kowalski on April 19, 1975. He was a loving and supportive father who drove his kids to rinks all over the Midwest for speed skating and hockey. Jim loved his grandchildren dearly. James retired from Bridgestone Firestone. Survived by his wife; children, Steven (Olivia), Eric, Jessica, Matthew, Kaitlin Backstrom; grandchildren, Amelia, Everett, Eliza, Noah; and siblings, John (Mary) and Bob Backstrom. Preceded in death by his parents. Memorial Visitation on Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at 10 a.m. Followed by a Celebration of Life at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 718 Harlem Road, Machesney Park.
