Rockford’s Biggest Rock Fan Verne K. Smith, 64 of Rockford died on January 12, 2011. He was born on May 8, 1946 in Muskegon, MI. Preceded in death by his parents, Julia and Stanley Domkowski. Verne was a fixture of the local music scene. During more than three decades, Verne attended hundreds, if not thousands, of shows and concerts put on in the Rockford area by local and national bands. In 2001, the Rockford Area Music Industry named Verne “the biggest music fan of all time.” He was a client of the ARC of Winnebago, Boone and Ogle Counties. Survived by his most trusted friend, Dave (Sally) Giamalva and his coordinator at the ARC, Pat (Ted) Kline as well as the many friends, fans and bands that he so enthusiastically supported. A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 21, 2011 at 10 am at Heartland Community Church, 1280 South Alpine Rd. Rockford, with visitation one hour prior to the time of service. Additional visitation hours on Thursday, January 20 from 5-8 pm at Heartland. Interment in Calvary Cemetery. After the interment, a Memorial Gathering will be held at Whiskeys Road House, 3207 N. Main St. Rockford. Per Verne’s wishes, memorials may be made in his name to the ARC, at 1222 East State Street Rockford, IL 61104. Grace Funeral & Cremation Services is assisting with arrangements.
