  • Richard Hammond: My deepest regrets and sympathies go out to his family and friends. Joe Adam changed my life and through his acts of kindness, mercy, and forgiveness. It was Joe that gave me a new look on life as a freshman in high school. He showed me and gave me the avenue by which I was able to change what some would have considered a foregone conclusion. To be just like the others who preceded me. He had absolutely no apparent reason to do what he did, yet he did anyway. This act of kindness to me really made me question the motives of my own behavior. I made a commitment to try to help others and treat others not as I had been treated but as maybe I would have liked to have been treated. Joe showed me the face of God I had not seen. Soon thereafter I accepted Christ as my personal Savior. I had not seen Joe for many years when we saw one another in church one day. I was serving with First Impressions when he came up and asked if I was from Belvidere. I told him I was and he then asked if I knew who he was. His appearance had changed greatly but when I looked in his eyes I knew. These were the same eyes I had looked fearfully into some 35 years earlier. Yes I knew him and told him his name. This is the reality of his impact that after all that time and all that change by both of us, he still knew who I was and I still knew who he was. In his words, I was "the good one" and to me , he was "my lucky break". I will miss Joe but he will forever be a part of who I am.
